He that dwelleth in the aid of the Most High, shall abide under the protection of the God of Jacob.
He shall say to the Lord: Thou art my protector and my refuge: my God, in Him will I trust
(Ps 90)
Have you heard Felice Anerio's Stabat Mater for twelve voices? It's a beautiful piece and an example of the Counter Reformation tendency to use massive vocal (and instrumental) power to impress an audience/congregation.
Patrick, Thanks for the recommendation I have just found a recording online http://www.we7.com/listen/National-Youth-Choir-of-Great-Britain/Stabat-Mater/radio?song=1840637#/listen/National-Youth-Choir-of-Great-Britain/Stabat-Mater/radio%3Fsong%3D1840637
Anerio's Christus Factus Est is also worth a listen - several versions on Youtube.
