The Order of Servants of the Blessed Virgin Mary, or Servites is, along with the Franciscans, Dominicans, Carmelites and Austin Friars, one of the five original Mendicant Orders of the Church. It was formed in 1233, by seven Florentine merchants, Buonfiglio dei Monaldi (Bonfilius), Giovanni di Buonagiunta (Bonajuncta), Amadeus of the Amidei (Bartolomeus), Ricovero dei Lippi-Ugguccioni (Hugh), Benedetto dell' Antella (Manettus), Gherardino di Sostegno (Sostene), and Alessio de' Falconieri (Alexius), who gave up their affluent lifestyles to live in holy poverty, and, in particular, to promote devotion to the Seven Sorrows, or Dolours, of Our Blessed Lady. The Seven Founders were canonised in 1888.

The Servites have their own Chaplet or Rosary, known as a Dolour Rosary, which consists of beads in groups of seven, each preceded by a medal depicting one of Our Lady's Seven Sorrows.

At the first medal, the Presentation, pray The Our Father and then seven
Hail Marys on the seven following beads Move through the seven Dolour's
in this way. As each of the dolour's are prayed, keep in mind experience of
Mary as Mother and witness to the Life of Our Lord, joining her in her Love
and her suffering.
End the rosary with three Hail Marys in honour of Our Lady’s tears.

Some celebrate the feast on 17th February,why is that so ?
ReplyDeleteThis is the effect of the changes in the Calendar between the Extraordinary and Ordinary Forms of the Roman Rite. I tend to use the EF calendar, which keeps the Feast on 12th. Feb. In the OF, the Feast is moved to 17th. Feb. Some Feasts have disappeared altogether, like St. Valentine on 14th. Feb (EF), who has been replaced by Ss Cyril and Methodius (OF) - I a sure much to the disappointment of romantics throughout the world :-)
